Mold Test Kits - Can They Help You?

Mold testing allows a homeowner to know what type of mold is growing in your home, what percentage of the air you breathe daily contains mold, and what information on the mold types that are contaminating your home.

There are two basic options for mold testing. Simple mold test kits can be purchased online for around $10 per kit. They are designed to test air in a single room. You simply open set the kit in the room, and after a short period of time (usually less than 24 hours), mold will grow inside of the test dish. This "sample" is then sent to a lab and for another small fee (usually around $30-50), results are sent back detailing the information you'll need.

 

Though using a mold test kit for mold testing is relatively inexpensive, the results are not controlled, and therefore cannot be a true measure for determining mold contamination amounts or types. A more accurate assessment can be obtained through an industrial hygienist, or mold testing company.

Through controlled settings, an accurate assessment can be obtained. Obviously, this method will be more expensive, but the results are much more accurate.

Mold testing is the first step in determining the severity of mold growth in your home. Whichever method you choose, realize that no mold growth is good in your home. Results should only be used to determine the severity of the problem.
