Stachybotrys - The Killer Mold
Stachybotrys chartarum has been identified as
one of the "toxic" molds. Stachybotrys grows primarily
on wet materials with a high cellulose content (dry
wall, wood, cardboard, ceiling tiles, etc.) When wet
it appears black and slimy becoming less shiny when
dry. But, the dead mold can cause the same reactions
as the live "wet" mold.
"Sick
building syndrome" has been linked to Stachybotrys.
Mycotoxins produced by Stachybotrys can lead to pulmonary
hemosiderosi (bleeding of the lungs) in infants. It
is also a major health concern for people with allergies,
COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder), immune
suppression, or lung disease.
While
some symptoms are mild (eye irritation, nasal stuffiness,
wheezing, muscle aches, or skin irritation); severe
reactions such as fever, shortness of breath, and memory
loss can also occur.
Removing
the stachybotrys mold from the effected area is not
enough. Molds require moisture to grow, so if you have
mold, you have a moisture problem. The source of the
moisture must be found and repaired first or the mold
will most likely come back.
This
is where waterproofing comes in to the picture. Waterproofing
obviously keeps the moisture out, which prevents the
mold from growing in the first place. Once waterproofing
is done, porous materials with mold growth on them must
be completely removed from the home as you cannot clean
mold from these types of materials.
So,
whether you currently have stachybotrys mold in your
home, or just want to keep it from growing, waterproofing
is always your first step. In fact, routine maintenance
of your home should include inspecting for water damage
and mold.
