Cleaning Up Mold

Added February 2, 2007

Q. Is it okay for me to clean up mold myself? I’ve heard it’s not that hard to do, but I want to make sure I’m not getting in over my head.

A: Before you try cleaning mold up yourself, you should first make sure that you are not allergic. If you are allergic to mold, it is best to have someone else do the cleanup.

Even if you aren’t allergic, it’s still a good idea to wear a breathing mask to limit your exposure to the spores. When you clean the mold, try not to disturb the powdery portions of the mold to limit the risk of spreading and inhalation of the spores.

Also, if the mold is extensive, you should definitely consider hiring a professional to keep the situation contained.
