What is Toxic Mold?

Added January 12, 2007

Q. So, what does toxic mold mean? Are all molds toxic, or just some of them?

A: Some, but not all molds can potentially give off mycotoxins (potentially harmful chemicals). The most recognized one is Stachybotrys chartarum (also known as Stachybotrys atra).

However it is not the most common indoor molds. The most common are actually Cladosporium, Penicillium, Aspergillus, and Alternaria. While Stachybotrys is not as common as these other molds, it isn’t considered rare.
