Household Mold Prevention
According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
"The way to control household mold growth is to control
moisture." So how do you control moisture? Regular
maintenance should include looking for signs of water
leaks in basements, exterior walls, roofs and around
plumbing.
Water
leaks in basements cause household mold problems and
are usually pretty obvious: damp walls and/or floors,
warped walls or floor coverings, etc. Exterior walls
should be inspected for gaps and/or cracks. When in
doubt, contact a waterproofing professional for an evaluation.
Roof
leaks will cause home mold, and usually result in drips
from the ceiling or water stains on the ceiling. Check
beams in the attic for signs of moisture. Visually inspect
roof penetrations (skylights, vents, chimneys, etc.).
Any leak should be fixed right away to prevent further
household mold growth.
While
you can't see pipes behind walls, there are other ways
to detect plumbing leaks. Are walls bowed, water stained,
have paint pealing or pealing drywall tape? Hear water
running or does your water meter run when no water is
in use? Is your water bill unusually high? If so consult
a plumber and get the leak repaired immediately.
Water leaking in walls can result in mold growing on
the drywall and/or the insulation. From there the mold
can spread into the rafters and even into the ventilation
system.
The
best defense against mold for household mold prevention
is to check regularly for signs of moisture intrusion.
If you find any type of leak contact a professional
immediately to repair the problem as soon as possible.
If you've already seen household mold growth, you'll
want to consider a solution for that problem also.
