Indoor
Air Quality - Are You At Risk?
The EPA lists indoor air quality (IAQ) as one of
the top 5 known environmental risks. Everything
from headaches to allergies and asthma can be attributed
to poor air quality in your home or office. The quality
of air inside a building can be anywhere from 2 to
100 times WORSE than the air outside of it!
Poor
home indoor air quality is usually caused by poor circulation.
Modern houses are built to prevent the loss of costly
air-conditioning. While this may save you money on your
electric bill, it also allows a buildup of many harmful
materials. Fumes from cleaners, pollen from outside,
cigarette smoke and carbon monoxide all contribute to
poor air quality in your living, working, or play space.
Regular
cleaning and vacuuming of your home can help reduce
pollutants in the air. This does not eliminate them
entirely though. Testing the air in your home or office
is an important step towards leading a healthy life.
You
can buy kits to test the quality of air in your home.
These can include test for the most common pollutants
and Petri dishes for mold and bacteria. These testing
services can also be performed by industrial hygenists
in your area.
Once
you conclude that you have poor indoor air quality,
there are many types of filtration systems that can
be used to cleanse your home. These can include electronic
air purifiers that reduce the amount of pollutants in
your home, as well as the risks associated with them.
You can also eliminate another source of the problem
by having your heating/cooling ducts cleaned on a regular
basis.
