Toxic
Black Mold - Will You Survive?
What is black mold? Molds are
part of the Fungi Kingdom. Mold, like other Fungi, obtain
their nutrition through breakdown and decay of organic
matter (a process called saprophytism). Different molds
breakdown different materials in order to "feed." Molds
need damp, dark conditions to thrive. Unfortunately,
many of these conditions occur in most homes and can
be hard to detect.
There
are many different molds that are black in color. The
deadly Strachybotrys
mold is often referred to as "black mold" or "toxic
black mold." But, it's not just the black molds that
pose health risks.
Some
common molds with adverse health effects include Aspergillus
(blue, green, white, yellow or black), Cladosporium
(green to black), Fusarium (white, cream, tan, salmon,
cinnamon, yellow, red, violet, pink, or purple) and
Penicillium (initially white becoming blue green, gray
green, olive gray, yellow or pinkish over time).
While
not all black molds are necessarily toxic, a general
visual comparison is not an adequate way to determine
the type of mold. Lab testing including viewing
a sample under a microscope is the only way to be sure.
Meanwhile, while you're waiting on the results from
the lab the mold is probably spreading through your
home.
So,
the safest thing to do is treat all molds as potential
hazards. In fact, if the mold infestation is too large,
many health departments recommend conducting mold removal
much like asbestos removal.
In
conclusion, it doesn't have to be black mold to be
harmful to your health. Because you don't know what
type of mold you're dealing with, treat all molds as
hazardous. To ensure the safety of you and your family's
health, contact a professional.
