Aspergillus
- What This Type of Mold Can Do To You and Your Family
Aspergillus is a group of molds common in the Northern
hemisphere, particularly in autumn and winter. This
group includes more than 185 species with at least 20
of those being identified as having the potential to
cause opportunistic infections in humans. The diseases
caused by Aspergillus are called aspergillosis. Most
people are naturally immune, but these diseases can
occur.
Allergic
Bronchopulmonary Aspergillosis is an allergy to the
spores of the Aspergillus molds common in asthmatics
and cystic fibrosis patients. Symptoms can mimic asthma
(episodes of feeling generally unwell, coughing and
wheezing. If left untreated, Allergic Bronchopulmonary
Aspergillosis can lead to permanent lung damage.
Aspergilloma
and chronic pulmonary aspergillosis occur when the Aspergillus
grows within a cavity of the lung previously damaged
during illness such as tuberculosis or sarcoidosis.
In fact, any lung disease which causes cavities can
leave a person open to developing an aspergilloma.
Early
detection is difficult as the person may not have any
symptoms. Eventually weight loss, chronic cough, tiredness
become common symptoms. Half or more patients will
also experience haemoptysis (coughing of blood).
Aspergillus
sinusitis occurs when Aspergillus grows in the sinus
cavities. For the average healthy person this will usually
result in stuffiness of the nose, chronic headache or
discomfort in the face.
Surgical
drainage of the sinus is usually needed to cure the
problem. If Aspergillus has invaded the sinuses deep
inside the skull, both surgery and antifungal drugs
will be necessary.
The
most important thing people can do to protect themselves
against these diseases is prevention. Prevent mold by
preventing the moisture from entering your home.
