Mold Allergies Affecting You?

Did you know that mold allergies are one of the major causes of illness and disability in the United States? A mold allergy is when the body basically overreacts to what would be to most people a harmless substance.The body confuses the substance for a bacteria or virus and attempts to fight back.

This results in the common symptoms of allergies such as sneezing with a runny or clogged nose, itchy/watery eyes, and coughing with post nasal drip (nasal/respiratory allergies) and/or skin rashes (skin allergies).

 

Why are some people affected by mold allergies, and some not?

Doctors and researchers really aren't sure. They do know that if one or both of your parents had allergies then you are more likely to develop allergies. Also, when the body's defenses are weak (shortly after a viral infection or during pregnancy) the body seems to be more susceptible to developing allergies when exposed to potential allergens.

And many of those people can also develop Asthma. Symptoms of Asthma include shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing. By the way, even though it is treatable, if not properly managed, Asthma can be fatal. There are also syndromes associated with mold sensitivity that are caused by long term contact with mold.

Mold allergy a problem for you? Go to an "allergist", a doctor that specializes in treating mold allergies. If you are diagnosed as allergic, your doctor can work with you to form a plan of treatment. But, the most important and most sensible step is to get away from or get rid of the mold.
